For many years I have had the privilege to design book jackets for various authors on a variety of subjects. The writer’s come from many walks of life; academia, marketing, business, art, etc.
I treat each cover design with equal importance, reading the material presented, meeting with the author when possible and brainstorming with the publishers and editor.
My work process starts with pencil roughs based on the creative meetings as well as from the manuscripts themselves. I carefully grid out the entire jacket design, including typography and visual placement before I move to the computer.
Once at the computer I source material from all mediums; photography, illustration, color theory, etc. in order to determine what best suits the story. Each cover, much like the content contained within is original, an invitation beckoning the audience to read on.
Below is a visual timeline of a specific cover I designed for a poetress.
The images are from initial drafts to the final approved cover.
